Visão geral do conteúdo
Conteúdo do curso
In the Christmas lecture in December 2012, a variety of physical phenomena were explained with the title ‘99 Experiments with Candles’, with one or more candles playing the leading role in each experiment. From these 99 experiments, 10 particularly impressive ones were selected, which are used in this course to teach the fundamentals of physics.
Objetivos de aprendizagem
This course aims to spark participants’ curiosity and interest in physics. Furthermore, it aims to help them gain an understanding of certain physical processes and to highlight the fact that physics is ever-present in everyday life, with its opportunities and risks in equal measure.
Pré-requisitos
No prior knowledge required.
Calendário do curso
The course runs for 5 weeks and is divided into 5 chapters. In each chapter, an experiment is described and demonstrated using two short videos, so that the theoretical background is easier to understand through the practical experiments. After watching the video, you can test your "aha" moments using multiple-choice questions. (An optional final quiz at the end of the 5 weeks enables course participants to receive a certificate of attendance.)
Certificado
For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic confirmation of participation (certificate) which includes your username, the course title, course duration as well as the hours required to complete the course. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that the user answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.

Instrutor do curso
Gernot Pottlacher
Associate Professor Gernot Pottlacher, Dipl.-Ing., Dr., completed his habilitation in experimental physics in 1999 and teaches at the Institute of Experimental Physics, Petersgasse 16, A-8010 Graz.
In 1982, he completed his degree in Physics at Graz University of Technology; in 1985, he passed the teaching qualification examination in Physics and completed the associated teacher training at the University of Education, Graz. In 1987, he was awarded a Doctorate in Technical Sciences.
Since 1982, he has been involved in setting up demonstration experiments for the Experimental Physics 1 and 2 lectures held by Prof. Dr H. Jäger. Since 1999, he has been delivering, amongst other things, the lecture ‘Physics for Civil Engineers’. He heads the Thermal and Metallurgical Physics working group at the institute. His particular hobby is public experimental lectures; his Christmas lectures on a wide variety of topics have already become legendary – in 2012, for example, ‘99 Experiments with Candles’.
Alexander Schmon
Alexander Schmon, a graduate engineer, has been a research assistant at the Institute of Experimental Physics at Graz University of Technology since 2011. He is working on his doctoral thesis within the Thermophysics and Metal Physics research group, led by Associate Professor Gernot Pottlacher. In addition to his teaching duties, he assists Dr Pottlacher with his regular public experimental lectures.
