Content overview
General information about the course
The design of digital learning offerings presents educators with new educational, technological, and organizational challenges. In this course, educators, trainers, and digital learning professionals learn how to systematically develop digital learning offerings. The course combines foundations of cognitive science with proven design models and instructional design principles, and demonstrates how digital learning offerings can be systematically planned and evaluated.
A central element of the course is the integration of myScripting, a freely accessible tool that supports course planning through visual flowcharts, metadata integration, and adaptive analytics. The course introduces the functionalities and various applications of the tool for designing digital learning offerings, and participants use it to create their own digital learning project.
Course content
The course is divided into 8 lessons:
Lesson 1: Course Organization
Lesson 1: Foundations of Cognitive Science
Lesson 2: Design Models
Lesson 3: Context Analysis
Lesson 4: Learning Organization
Lesson 5: Content Structuring
Lesson 6: Teaching Strategies
Lesson 7: Learning Activities
Lesson 8: Analytics
In parallel with the content lessons, an instructional design is developed using myScripting.
Learning goals
After completing this course, the participants will be able to
- apply core principles of cognitive science;
- design digital learning using proven strategies;
- analyse educational contexts in a structured way;
- define competence-oriented learning outcomes;
- structure content for improved learner understanding;
- evaluate learning strategies for specific contexts;
- determine learning organization based on learner needs;
- create engaging digital learning activities;
- reflect critically on educational design choices;
- develop and refine scripts using myScripting;
- collaborate with peers on script development;
- export learning designs in multiple formats.
Prerequisites
The course assumes basic knowledge of teaching and learning and is aimed at individuals who wish to deepen their expertise in educational design and digital learning.
Course schedule
The course consists of eight lessons, each including videos, exercises, and quizzes. In addition, a course book is provided (open access). All lessons are released at the start of the MOOC and can be completed flexibly as a self-paced course.
Participants use the freely available tool myScripting (www.myscripting.zhaw.ch) to design digital learning environments.
Certificate
For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic certificate which includes your name, the course name as well as the completed units. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that you answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.
