Course content

This MOOC provides an accessible introduction to the question of how written accompanying materials (programmes, introductory texts, reviews, online formats) shape our experience of music: What knowledge is offered? Who is regarded as ‘knowledgeable’? And how does this influence what we perceive while listening and what we identify as significant? The starting point is an examination of the idea of represented forms of knowledge in programme notes, particularly with regard to historical changes. The course combines ideas from music education, musicology, discourse analysis and the pedagogy of writing: participants learn to recognise knowledge as something constructed – and, by the end, formulate their own brief analysis of a musical work as a visible learning outcome.

Prerequisites

No specific prerequisites, but an interest in music is an advantage!
