Declaration on Accessibility
Graz University of Technology endeavors to make its digital offers accessible in accordance with the Web Accessibility Act (WZG) as amended to implement Directive (EU) 2016/2102 of the European Parliament and of the Council of October 26, 2016, on the accessibility of the websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies.
This accessibility statement applies to the MOOC platform iMooX (https://imoox.at), operated on the basis of Moodle, and is primarily aimed at anyone wants to further their education with online courses.
Status of compliance with requirements
iMooX is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at conformity level A and with the applicable European standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1. Some content is currently not fully accessible. This statement is based on a self-assessment in combination with feedback from internal experts.
For better traceability, the degree of accessibility is determined on the basis of systematic testing in a representative course. The evaluation is based on the four principles of the WCAG (perceivability, operability, understandability, robustness) and results in an average conformity value of 87.90%.
Exemplary test course for accessibility
A test course with common Moodle activities (e.g., files, assignments, forums, videos, quizzes) was created for the systematic assessment of accessibility. This course serves as a representative example to identify and document typical barriers. A system-wide review of all courses would not be feasible due to their individuality.
Link to the test course: https://imoox.at/course/testkurs_barrierefreiheit
The review yielded the following results:
- Perceivable: 66.58%
- Operable: 92.07%
- Understandable: 98.99%
- Robust: 93.94%
The evaluation was based on weighted success criteria from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 and takes into account the relevance of the identified barriers for different user groups of the platform.
The areas of perceivable and robust show the greatest deficits. During systematic testing, the following success criteria were not met by some pages:
- 1.1.1 Non-text Content
- 1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded)
- 1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded)
- 1.2.3 Audio Description of Media Alternative (Prerecorded)
- 1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded)
- 1.2.6 Sign Language (Prerecorded)
- 1.2.7 Extended Audio Description (Prerecorded)
- 1.2.8 Media Alternative (Prerecorded)
- 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum)
- 1.4.6 Contrast (Enhanced)
- 1.4.8 Visual Presentation
- 2.4.4 Link Purpose (in Context)
- 2.4.9 Link Purpose (Link only)
- 2.4.10 Section headings
- 2.5.5 Target Size (Enhanced)
- 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum)
- 3.2.1 On Focus
- 4.1.2 Name, Role Value
Identified restrictions
The following barriers were identified during the systematic review. They relate to the underlying Moodle system, the theme used, and the content provided by course creators.
Perceivable
Missing alternative text
Some graphic elements (e.g., icons, symbols, embedded images) do not have meaningful alternative text both in system content and materials provided by course creators. Improvements are planned through theme updates and raising awareness among course creators.
Audio and video content
The prerecorded audio and video content do not always have an audio description, captions or sign the language of the audio and video content. This behavior depends on the respective content provided by the course creators.
Insufficient colour contrast
Certain controls and text areas do not meet the required contrast ratios depending on the selected design. Improvements are planned with future theme updates.
Visual presentation
The adaption of fore- and background color, typography or text color by the user is not possible. This behavior is due to the selected theme. Improvements are planned with future theme updates.
Operable
Link purpose
The identification of link purposes in link text or link text combined with context is not always possible. Improvements are planned with future theme updates.
Section headings
The hierarchy of section headings is programmatically incorrect. Improvements are planned with future theme updates.
Insufficient target sizes for buttons and links
Some controls do not meet the recommended minimum sizes for comfortable interaction. Improvements are planned with future theme updates.
Understandable
Predictable on focus
The behavior of certain elements under focus is not predictable. Improvements are planned with future theme updates.
Robust
Missing or incomplete role and value assignments
Some interactive components do not meet all requirements for programmatic determinability (name, role, value). Technical adjustments planned for future Moodle versions.
Scope of this statement
This statement applies to the MOOC platform of the domain iMooX.at
Other learning platforms provided by Graz University of Technology that are based on different technical or design principles are not part of this statement. Separate accessibility statements may apply to these platforms.
Feedback and contact
We are constantly working to further improve the accessibility of the platforms. If you encounter any barriers or have any questions about how to use the platforms, please contact us:
iMooX team

If you believe that you have been disadvantaged by the inadequate accessibility of this website and have not received a satisfactory response to your feedback from the above contact point, you can lodge a complaint with the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).
The FFG accepts complaints electronically via the contact form of the complaints office.
Complaints are examined to determine whether they relate to violations of the provisions of the Web Accessibility Act, in particular deficiencies in compliance with accessibility requirements by the federal government or an institution associated with it.
If the complaint is justified, the FFG will issue recommendations for action to the federal government or the legal entities concerned and propose measures to remedy the deficiencies identified.
