Course details

General information about the course

This self-study course raises awareness of the needs of people with dementia. The learning programme consists of three short modules, each lasting approximately 15 minutes, and an assessment. The course uses film clips from the film ‘Honig im Kopf’ (Head Full of Honey). This is done with the kind permission of Warner Bros. Studios. The clips are explicitly excluded from the Creative Commons licence.

Course content

Demenz.Aktivgemeinde invites people with dementia and their relatives and friends into the centre of society. In this way, we want to work against the stigmatisation of this disease. By completing these online training sessions, you too can help bring people with dementia into our midst. Because knowledge creates safety, even when dealing with people with dementia.

Learning goals

By completing these online training sessions, you can learn about dementia and important communication principles that enable respectful interaction.

Prerequisites

No prior knowledge of dementia is required.

Course schedule

Module 1 begins by explaining the disease itself and also discusses its stages and secondary symptoms. Interactive elements enhance attention and the learning process. Module 2 uses different situations to teach important principles of communication that can be used when interacting with a person with dementia. It also introduces a simple mnemonic device called RESI (German acronym: ‘Create calm’, ‘Listen empathetically’, ‘Provide reassurance’, ‘Interact/Talk to each other’) is introduced to support the memorisation of communication principles. Finally, Module 3 aims to apply the principles developed in Modules 1 and 2 to other situations. Several scenes from the film ‘Honig im Kopf’ (Head Full of Honey, director: Till Schweiger) are used for this purpose.

Certificate

For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic certificate which includes your name, the course name as well as the completed lessons. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that you answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.
