Asst.-Prof. Dr. Anna Kaiser is a specialist in the field of cultural heritage protection. In 2013 she received her doctorate sub auspiciis praesidentis at the University of Vienna with a thesis on the Roman military. Since 2015 she has been a researcher for cultural property protection at University for Continuing Education Krems and has ever since played a significant role in the establishment and international positioning of the Center for Cultural Property Protection, of which she has been head since 2023. As such she acts as coordinator for several EU projects on cultural heritage protection, climate change, preservation and sustainable use of cultural heritage. Anna Kaiser teaches and holds lectures for national and international audiences on the broad topic of cultural property protection and emphasizes the particular importance in creating sustainable as well as feasible interfaces between civil stakeholders, various emergency services and especially the military.
CHePiCC
online is an EU co-funded project within the Erasmus+ programme, led by the Center for Cultural Property Protection of the
University for Continuing Education Krems, Austria. It translates
state-of-the-art research on climate change and cultural heritage protection
into distance and blended learning programmes for higher education learners.
The
project is fully in line with the current challenge of high-quality online
teaching (the importance was highlighted during the COVID-19 lockdowns all over
the world) and the current European incentives to mitigate climate change &
to sustainably protect cultural heritage from the threats that this change
poses:
In
2020 the Croatian Presidency of the Council of European Union named cultural
heritage protection in climate change as #1 priority. Cultural heritage is
exposed to a number of risks in the 21st century, comparatively analyzed by the
2018 study on Safeguarding cultural heritage from natural and man-made
disasters and highlighted by the joint EUUNESCO Initiative#7 “Heritage at risk”
as well as ICOMOS, which in 2019 put a focus on engaging cultural heritage in
climate action.
Following
the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018, the European Framework for
Action on Cultural Heritage names the holistic approach to the topic as one of
the four principles for success and highlights the importance of cultural
heritage as a resource for the future.
The
project’s main output, this online course on cultural heritage protection in
climate change, promotes cultural heritage as exactly that resource &
enables higher education teachers and learners to build their personal future
on our common pasts.

In a total of 4 units, CHePiCC online brings cultural heritage (tangible, movable or immovable, but also intangible) back into society & fosters the understanding of its importance, its shared values & identities, covering the following topics:

- Preparatory Measures for the Protection of Cultural & Natural Landscapes

The main
and long-term aim of this project is to bring heritage back into teaching and
learning in higher education, to enable future generations to protect cultural
heritage.
This is
intended to contribute to the preservation of cultural identity and to initiate
a change in behavior with regard to the protection of cultural heritage,
especially in the (future) professional life of students and teachers at
universities. This
inclusive, modular and transdisciplinary learning programme enables higher
education learners to include in their professional lives all necessary
disciplines for
- enhancing climate protection means
- preparing cultural landscapes and their built heritage for the immediate effects of climate change and natural catastrophes
- doing
the same for movable cultural heritage
No previous
experience is required for participation. Course held in English.
CHePiCC online consists of 4 units divided into several thematic lessons. Each lesson deals in depth with the respective topic. Numerous international experts from various fields of cultural property protection present their lectures in short video units. The positive completion of quizzes is a prerequisite for unlocking subsequent lessons.
For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic certificate which includes your username, the course name as well as the completed lessons. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that the user answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.

The necessary holistic approach to the wide topic of cultural heritage protection is ensured by the transdisciplinary composition of the project's partnership, which holds expertise in cultural property protection, cultural landscapes, climatology and climate change, structural engineering, material handling, preparedness measures, heritage sciences, conservation and restoration. Mit der Absolvierung
dieser Online-Schulungen können Sie sich zum Thema Demenz informieren und
wichtige Kommunikations- Prinzipien erlernen, die ein wertschätzendes
Miteinander ermöglichen.
Es sind keinerlei Vorkenntnisse zu dem Thema Demenz erforderlich.
Im Modul 1 wird zunächst die Erkrankung selbst erklärt und auch auf die Stadien und die Folgesymptome eingegangen. Interaktive Elemente fördern dabei die Aufmerksamkeit und den Lernprozess. Innerhalb des Moduls 2 werden mittels unterschiedlicher Situationen wichtige Prinzipien der Kommunikation vermittelt, die im Rahmen einer Interaktion mit einer Person mit Demenz eingesetzt werden können. Auch wird eine einfache Merkhilfe, nämlich RESI („Ruhe herstellen“, „Einfühlsam zuhören“, „Sicherheit geben“, „Interaktion/miteinander reden“) eingeführt, die das Erlernen der Kommunikationsprinzipien unterstützen soll. Das 3. Modul verfolgt schließlich das Ziel, die in Modul 1 und 2 erarbeiteten Prinzipien in weiteren Situationen anzuwenden. Dazu wurden einige Szenen aus dem Film „Honig im Kopf“ (Regisseur: Till Schweiger) verwendet.
Für die aktive Teilnahme am Kurs erfolgt bei Abschluss die Ausstellung eines automatisierten Zertifikats, welches Ihren Benutzernamen, den Kursnamen und die abgeschlossenen Lektionen beinhalten. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, dass es sich nur um eine Bestätigung handelt, die aussagt, dass die Benutzerin oder der Benutzer zumindest 75% der gestellten Selbstüberprüfungsfragen richtig beantwortet hat.

Risk Management for Cultural Heritage is a project funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme, led by Mazzini Lab Società Benefit (IT) and carried out in partnership with Arte Generali, the arts and culture dedicated branch of the Generali Insurance Group, and 3 renowned European universities: the Center for Cultural Property Protection of the University for Continuing Education Krems (AT), the Università per Stranieri di Perugia (IT) and the Ústav Teoretické A Aplikované Mechaniky (CZ).
The overall objective of the project is to develop and pilot a new
curriculum for vocational training that meets the needs of the labour market in
the field of cultural heritage protection in the face of climate change and
formalises the relevant skills and competences.
An important outcome of the project is this online course: In a
museum, library, archive or cultural institution, there is usually someone in
charge of ensuring that cultural objects or built heritage are protected from
extreme weather conditions (e.g. floods) and other natural disasters (e.g.
earthquakes).
However, task allocation alone is not sufficient and not always
sustainable.
Cultural heritage is a non-renewable resource that is essential to
our identity. It is therefore necessary to develop more effective and efficient
strategies for the conservation, adaptation and protection of this invaluable
property for the long term future.
Actors in the field of material cultural heritage (e.g. owners of
historic houses, conservators, restorers, managers and staff of historic
buildings, monuments, archaeological sites, museums, archives, libraries and
art galleries) need intuitive digital tools for risk assessment of their
collections and objects in order to develop structured, comprehensive and
shareable conservation plans.
In particular, they need to be able to activate a new approach that
allows them to adapt to the current global situation, develop solutions and act
immediately to manage the risks that climate change and global warming pose to
the cultural sector.
The Risk Management for Cultural Heritage online course aims to enhance the capacity of cultural sector professionals to properly assess and manage the risks of climate change.

SOS Heritage is a project funded by the EU Creative Europe Programme, led by Mazzini Lab Società Benefit (IT) and implemented in partnership with 4 other organisations from 4 European countries: the Center for Cultural Property Protection of the University for Continuing Education Krems (AT), the Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane (IT), the Transylvania Trust Foundation (RO) and the National Museum Kruševac (RS).
Based on the European cultural context, the project takes concrete actions to strengthen the cultural sector's capacity to deal with the challenges and opportunities of digitisation and risk management for tangible cultural property, and to establish a set of best practices for the enhancement and promotion of cultural heritage.
Climate change and resource
scarcity are among the major threats of our time. They are forcing cultural
sector actors to optimise their skills and knowledge in assessing, managing and
preventing risks to their collections and buildings from natural disasters and
climate change.
In many countries, a new
professional group is emerging informally in the cultural sector: the Risk Manager for Cultural Heritage.
Cultural heritage professionals
need specific skills and competencies to assess the risks to their collections
and objects, carry out deeper and more accurate analyses, and develop effective
risk management plans.
This online course is specifically designed for experts and professionals in the cultural sector (e.g. owners of historic houses, conservators, restorers, managers and staff of historic buildings, monuments, archaeological sites, museums, archives, libraries and art galleries) and provides know-how and (digital) tools to meet the current challenges posed by the climate crisis.
