General Course Information

In the project "tune_in", workshops on the topics of acoustics and electrical engineering for children and young people from different ethnic backgrounds from primary and secondary schools were developed and carried out. The project is funded by the FFG within the framework of the Talente regional programme and is carried out jointly by nowa and TU Graz in cooperation with companies and schools.

The tools, methods and teaching materials developed are made available in this MOOC in the form of a diversity-sensitive and gender-appropriate toolbox for educators.

Gender stereotypes continue to manifest themselves in the educational and career choices of young people. Children learn very early on which behaviour, skills and abilities are attributed to which gender and who is seen as less or better suited for what.

The tune_in project has set itself the goal of starting precisely here and opening up joyful access to the world of technology for all pupils through age-appropriate explanations and hands-on experiments. Interest and talent are in the foreground and are strengthened by the pupils' own actions.  In this way, attributions regarding gender can be broken down, role stereotypes can be challenged and, in addition, different approaches can be used as a resource.

Content

Course Content

The MOOC is aimed at educators who want to go on a discovery trip with their students through the world of language, acoustics and electrical engineering and get to know various lesser-known professions. More specifically, this MOOC includes various workshops and tools on the topics of language (formation and perception of language, etc.), acoustics (formation and perception of sound, loudspeaker construction, etc.) and job profiles (role models from the companies and the project team, who cover a broad spectrum of career paths, provide impulses for possible training or career paths, etc.).

The MOOC consists of a total of 4 units. In each unit you will find suggestions, tools, methods, concrete instructions and background information for the design and implementation of workshops or of small projects in the context of teaching. Units 1-3 also contain special videos to support you in planning, preparing and implementing the workshops.

Quiz questions at the end of each unit are designed to help you review and briefly reflect on the content of the units.

Course Goals

Acquiring basic knowledge about diversity-sensitive and gender-responsive knowledge transfer using the developed workshops, the professional videos, the additional materials and the information provided.

Course Procedure

These are the topics:

Unit 1: Instructions and materials for educators on how to design and run a language workshop developed in tune_in. In this workshop, the pupils will deal with the phenomena of speaking, listening and understanding, among others. Speaking in different languages is also addressed.

Unit 2: Instructions and materials for teachers on how to design and run an acoustic workshop developed in tune_in. A loudspeaker can also be built as part of this workshop.

Unit 3: Instructions and materials for educators on how to design diversity-sensitive and gender-responsive job profile work around the topics of acoustics and electrical engineering. In this unit, role models from the professional fields of acoustics and electrical engineering talk in a video about their everyday work, their areas of responsibility, their motivation and the products they produce.

Unit 4: Background information and theoretical basics for educators on diversity-sensitive and gender-appropriate teaching.)


Certificate

For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic certificate which includes your username, the course name as well as the completed lessons. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that the user answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.

Ass.Prof. Mag.rer.nat. Dr. Barbara Schuppler

Barbara Schuppler is an assistant professor at the Institute for Signal Processing and Speech Communication at Graz University of Technology. Her research interests mainly include the development of technical methods for the investigation of speech melody and pronunciation variation in spontaneous conversations. This involves analysing the acoustic signal of recorded conversations for phonetic details and integrating the linguistic insights gained into models for automatic speech recognition.
After her doctorate in the field of automatic speech recognition and research stays in the Netherlands, Norway, France and Spain, she joined the Institute for Signal Processing and Speech Communication in 2012. There she has so far led three FWF projects on pronunciation variation in spontaneous conversations. In 2019, she co-organised the Interspeech conference, including the workshop 'Speech and Language Technology in Education' and the teacher training 'Siri, Alexa & Co. A guest at the Interspeech Conference'.

Dipl.-Ing. Eric Kurz

Eric Kurz is a university assistant at the Institute for Signal Processing and Speech Communication at Graz University of Technology. His research interests include room acoustics, specifically sound field analysis and modelling of porous absorbers in room edges and corners, audio and studio engineering, and spatial audio signal processing.
After graduating from the interdisciplinary degree programme "Electrical Engineering-Sound Engineering" at Graz University of Technology and Graz University of the Arts in 2018, he first worked as a project assistant at the Institute of Hearing Technology and Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University and started a PhD programme in the field of acoustics and audio engineering at the Institute of Signal Processing and Speech Communication in 2019. Since 2021, he has been in charge of the sound studio at Graz University of Technology.

Heidi Gaube, MA, MBA

Heidi Gaube is responsible at nowa, Training Beratung Projektmanagement for strategic project management and for the development, planning, coordination and implementation of projects at regional, national and international level. She has been working for more than 25 years as an expert in the fields of (adult) education, gender mainstreaming, human resource development, monitoring, support and implementation of gender equality processes in companies and organisations and lifelong learning. After studying educational science, she completed a master's degree in systemic leadership and management in educational institutions and HRM.

Karoline Droschl-Pieringer, M.A.

Karoline Droschl-Pieringer is an employee in the Office for Equality and the Advancement of Women at Graz University of Technology and is responsible for school cooperation in the area of children's and youth activities. In addition to her job, she is the chairwoman of the "Grrrls Kulturverein", which promotes women* in the field of music and culture through concerts, jam sessions, radio broadcasts, workshops, music releases, etc. It promotes women* in the field of music and culture.

Florian Ungerböck, MSc

Florian Ungerböck is an employee in the Office for Equality and the Advancement of Women at Graz University of Technology and is responsible for women's* advancement projects in the field of children and youth. These include the so-called CoMaed courses, IT summer course weeks for girls from the age of 10, as well as holiday jobs and study orientation events for pupils from the age of 15.
