General Course Information

This MOOC is part of the EU+ Project HELCI Higher Education Learning Community for Inclusion in cooperation with the University of Salamanca in Spain and the Mykolas Romeris University in Lithuania. In the framework of this project we have produced four MOOCs with different focuses:

  • Human rights in Academia

  • Building inclusive Diversity: Learning about affective-sexual and Gender diversity

  • Substantive Gender equality at the university

  • Diversity in the context of university. Racism-critical perspectives into everyday university life

This particular MOOC focuses - as the name suggests - on cultural and ethnic diversity within the university context. Based on the diverse university community of the University of Vienna, we provide knowledge and expertise in the field of diversity, inclusion and anti-discrimination. To this end, we spoke to scientists and experts who work both inside and outside the university environment. In addition, some videos were created by students themselves, who dealt with the topics of racism and discrimination as a part of a seminar.

The MOOC is aimed at the entire university community - from lecturers and administrative staff to students and other educational institutions

Course Content

In recent years, universities across Europe have become increasingly diverse and inclusive. Nevertheless, as studies and personal accounts show, the university context is still characterised by various forms of discrimination, such as sexism, ableism, homophobia, classism and racism. Access to university is not equally possible for all social groups. At the same time, there is also a growing need to address the diversity of both students and staff within the university. Students in particular are increasingly calling for changes to curricula in order to create an inclusive and diverse university and for teachers to adapt their teaching and content to the new circumstances.

The course therefore provides a basic introduction to the topic of "Racism and anti-racism in the university context" and consists of an introduction and four content-related lessons.

The topics of the four lectures are

  1. What is diversity?

  2. Perspectives on university

  3. Diversity in and out of classroom

  4. Students as actors of change

Course Goals

After completing the course, participants should gain a basic understanding of the concepts of diversity, racism and anti-racism and understand how they are embedded in social contexts.

In addition, this MOOC should encourage participants to self-reflect and motivate them to deal with the topics of diversity and discrimination on their own.

Previous Knowledge

No specific prior knowledge required.

Course Procedure

As described above, the course consists of an introduction and four content lessons. Each of these lessons contains 5-6 learning videos. As soon as you are an active participant in the MOOC, all lessons are available to you and you can work them through in the order of your choice.

At the end of each module, you will find a reflection video and a quiz where you can independently check your learning progress. Some of the videos also include interactive elements to test or expand your newly acquired knowledge. Successful completion of the entire course results in a course certificate.

Certificate

For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic certificate which includes your username, the course name as well as the completed lessons. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that the user answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.
