Course Content

This course offers an introduction to bouldering and sport climbing indoors. Starting with theoretical basics, the first units explain techniques, which can then be applied on the climbing wall. In addition to equipment knowledge, the focus of the course will also be on safety.

This course can only be taken online. It should be noted that the videos are not a training course in rope climbing. A practical course is very important for learning safety techniques and how to use safety equipment. This course was created as part of a final thesis, and the intention ist to combine this course with practical elements.

Course Goals

  • Knowledge about bouldering and climbing
  • Required material and equipment
  • Climbing and safety techniques
  • Basics of safety in sport climbing

Previous Knowledge

Only the most basic computer and Internet skills are required, such as the ability to play videos and fill out feedback forms. More detailed information about 360° videos and virtual reality is provided in the videos. Certain athletic abilities and skills are beneficial for the practical part, as climbing can be very exhausting, especially at first.

Course Procedure

The first part of each unit takes place online in form of instructional videos, some of which are 360° videos. As a special experience, these videos can be viewed with virtual reality glasses, providing unique insights into climbing techniques. Once per unit, there is a self-assessment to review the content of the videos. For the group that completed the entire course, including the practical part, a practical climbing session took place once a week at CAC Graz. After the last unit, there is a feedback form in which the videos and the entire course are evaluated.

Certificate

For actively participating in the course you will receive an automatic confirmation of participation (certificate) which includes your username, the course title, course duration as well as the hours required to complete the course. We want to point out that this certificate merely confirms that the user answered at least 75% of the self-assessment questions correctly.
