General Course Information

#Tech2Match

How do I match technology to people or patients with pain?

Technology is an indispensable part of healthcare; however, research indicates that currently, healthcare professionals’ skills may not be updated to accommodate how to use technologies in cooperation with patients, and there is still a lack of implementation of relevant technology and an overuse of technology. The course addresses how healthcare professionals can apply digital technology constructively and critically for people with acute or chronic pain. The course consists of two parts: 1) iMooX learning activities and 2) resources available through the TECH2MATCH homepage. All learning activities take a blended approach, and materials are available at no cost and involve reading materials, learning videos, quizzes, interactive activities, and real-life scenarios.

Course Content

In the MOOC "Tech2Match - Technologies for patients with pain" you will cover an introduction to pain and the technologies, followed by in-depth learning involving Mobile Apps, Monitoring technologies, Virtual Reality, and Telehealth. The unit "Introduction to pain (and technologies)" - provides the prerequisites necessary to move on to the following units, addressing each technology in detail. The technology-specific units will give you a deeper understanding of how to apply each technology in a clinical context related to the management of patients with pain from a constructive and critical perspective. The course content is in English with subtitles where applicable. All course content is aimed at providing you with knowledge, skills, and competencies in accordance with the learning goals stated below.

Course Goals

The goals of the course are for participants to become familiar with a range of technologies used for pain assessment and treatment, enhancing their technological skills and ability to effectively apply these technologies to patients with pain. A balanced and reflective attitude toward technology in healthcare will be fostered, and participants will be guided on how to support patients using technology, ensuring a human-centered approach to care. Specifically, participants will obtain knowledge about pain, its origin, models, theories, and mechanisms. Achieve skills in using technology to facilitate communication, evaluation, and management of pain while addressing the ethical implications of technology use in different healthcare contexts. Competencies in problem-solving, decision-making, and communication will be fostered through real-life scenarios, and participants will become competent in selecting and adjusting technology based on patient characteristics, clinical environment, and cultural background while addressing usability challenges, risks, and data management.
